What is a Dental Implant?

Replicating the natural function and appearance of your lost teeth can be very difficult to accomplish.  Historically, dentures or bridge restorations would be used as replacements, but with limited results.  Dental implants, however, are natural-looking replacements for missing teeth that also provide the same function as your natural tooth root. They have also been used to anchor these other types of restorations for greater success and patient satisfaction.

How To Choose A Dentist Who Will Place Your Dental Implants; Who Will Restore The Teeth?

Many types of dentists may be qualified to diagnose dental implant treatment, such as a periodontist,  an oral surgeon, general dentist and prosthodontists (specialist in prosthetics, like Dr. Perez!) .  However, keep in mind that not all dentists have had adequate training and education in this growing field and may possibly (but not intentionally) mis-diagnose or more commonly, discourage the option of implants due to lack of knowledge of the procedure.  One of the ways to ensure that the dentist you choose is properly trained to diagnose and place dental implants is to ask the doctor about the continuing education and about his or her experience.   Many practitioners refer their patients out to a separate office to have the implants placed, and then return to the referring doctor’s office to restore the implant(s).  This makes up the majority of cases being treated; however more and more dentists are offering the placement of the dental implants and the fabrication of the teeth (the restoration(s)) in one convenient location.
